Job Description:
The Small Systems Operator (SSO) provides customer service related to delivery of residential and commercial water service including verifying water meter data, repairing and replacing meters, turning on and off water services, and communicating with customers in relation to these activities.
Job Responsibilities:
- Locates and marks distribution mains, valves, services, and other infrastructure
- Collects water samples for laboratory analysis and for reporting to interdepartmental and outside regulatory agencies
- Installs, repairs, and tests residential and commercial meters of various sizes, records water levels, electrical use, and utilization of other sources of supply, records production and chemical usage; changes charts, tests, calibrates, and repairs instrumentation including flow chart, flow and production meters, and transducers
- Operates well and booster pumps and regulates other sources of water supply. Checks and maintains pressure and foot recorders and documents chlorine residuals throughout the systems
- Performs meter turn-ons and turn-offs, investigates water leaks, verifies meter reads, answers customer questions, and concerns
- Prepares, cleans, maintains, and operates specialized equipment such as powered industrial trucks and service vehicles
- Performs routine work and maintenance inside pressure vaults and at booster and pressure reducing stations, enters confined spaces such as tanks and vaults to troubleshoot, clean, repair, service, and maintain treatment and distribution systems
- Diagnoses and troubleshoots system failures; escalates work tickets for advance repairs or further diagnostics
- Operates water treatment and purification equipment and performs minor maintenance, responsible for storing, retrieving, mixing, and monitoring chemicals used in distribution and treatment plants, performs field analysis of water supply for chlorine content; makes appropriate adjustments for proper water calibration
- Cleans, maintains, inspects, and performs minor repairs to pump house, stations, and equipment
Job Requirements:
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Applications
- Upon hire, must provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination status
- Valid Washington driver’s license
- Water Treatment Plant Operator 1 certification
- Must have the ability to obtain a Cross Connection Control Specialist certification within 18 months of employment
- High school diploma or possession of a GED
- Washington State Department of Health Water Distribution Manager 1 certification
