Job Description:

Senior Communications Specialist will collaborate with multiple teams of professional communicators and mission staff, including international teams, developing strategic messaging and campaigns, utilizing social media, print materials, presentations, outreach events, video, podcasts, and digital content to share NASA Mars achievements and technology advances in Mars science

Job Responsibilities:

  • Work with NASA Headquarters, center counterparts, international partners, mission managers and Principal Investigators (PIs) to create a mutually beneficial partnership with ongoing communication and customer service.
  • Capture metrics and report on project achievements program impacts and provide informed suggestions for improvements
  • Attend project meetings regularly and report on program results and/or communications news
  • Periodic travel to support public engagement events and conferences to represent NASA communication initiatives
  • Support end-to-end creation of public engagement products including concepts, production, inventory management and storage requirements
  • Propose ideas and plans to senior managers and regularly present to senior management and team members both at JPL and NASA Headquarters
  • Develop and share NASA science/storytelling using digital communication tools (web, mobile, social media, print, digital and or video) as well as print products to effectively communicate a message that aligns with NASA’s communication priorities
  • Research industry trends and provide ongoing improvements to public engagement programs and products, including online and in-person experiences
  • Work closely with managers to coordinate and review the budget including proposing appropriate budget levels to support communication products and outreach events
  • Implement communications plans and regularly present to senior management and team members both at JPL and NASA Headquarters

Job Requirements:

  • Experience developing and implementing large scale communications campaigns and reporting metrics
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Suite, project management software, Adobe Creative Suite, Slack and social media platforms
  • Ability to establish partnerships and collaborate with high level stakeholders and handling a variety of strategic and budgetary planning
  • Excellent writing, editing (web/photo/video/text), digital content creation, presentation and communication skills; Knowledge of online best practices
  • Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Science/Technology, or related subject area degree, with a minimum of 6 years of related experience; or Master’s degree with at least 4 years of relevant experience.
  • Ability to distill complex science and engineering topics into brief, colorful, and understandable materials for the public
  • Consistent track record producing and delivering high impact events, experiences and products
