Job Description:

The External Communications Associate role will have a key focus on the national and local branding of Macy’s stores, establishing Macy’s as your style source delivered by a digitally-led omnichannel retailer. This position will work with a team to create and execute an integrated media strategy that brings the Macy’s narrative to life across the country through key store-related business initiatives, such as new store openings and expansions, initiative-based launches and thought leadership opportunities with executive leadership.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Recaps media results in partnership with the External Communications Team – as relevant and by project
  • Develops and implements short and long-term strategies for key company initiatives involving stores and distribution centers (new store openings and expansions, hiring initiatives, initiative-based launches) – ultimately generating positive media coverage
  • Provides strategic guidance and collaborates with the stores and cross functional teams, such as merchandising, legal, HR, marketing, government affairs, risk management and social media
  • Build and maintain strong, productive relationships with traditional and non-traditional media contacts –focusing on national media and key priority media markets
  • Leverages Macy’s social handles to develop shareable content
  • Develop and edits press materials, media advisories, manages new media content development and pitches for ongoing placements
  • Research and monitors trend changes in earned, owned and paid media to inform strategies
  • Cultivates strong relationships with all levels of leadership internally and externally (company and store leadership, civic and non-profit partners)
  • Protects the brand through managing crisis issues related directly to stores in partnership with the overall External Comms Team
  • Successfully manage complex, fast moving and unexpected communications challenges
  • Identifies and media-trains spokespeople to represent Macy’s nationally and in the respective markets, focusing on thought leadership for key company executives

Job Requirements:

  • Background in retail or other consumer business is a plus
  • May occasionally involve stooping, kneeling, or crouching
  • May involve close vision, color vision, depth perception, focus adjustment, and viewing computer monitor for extended periods of time
  • This position involves regular walking, standing, sitting for extended periods of time, hearing, and talking
  • Experience in strategic thinking and planning to drive executive communications calendar
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects in a timely manner
  • Involves manual dexterity for using keyboard, mouse, and other office equipment
  • Strong personal impact with the ability to easily build relationships and credibility
  • BA/BS in communications-related field, with 5-7 years of experience in public relations, media relations, communications or related area
  • Innovative, creative, proactive and confident thinker
  • Problem solving skills – able to anticipate and proactively mitigate issues
  • Advanced use of Microsoft Office suite, media monitoring programs and social media channels
  • Strong interpersonal skills and highly collaborative
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision and make sound decisions
  • Proven history of success in working with/pitching reporters; strong contacts at consumer and business print, broadcast and online outlets
  • Able to story tell with a succinct, conversational voice
  • Effective command of language and writing (communications plans, press materials, executive messaging/presentations, etc.)
