Job Description:

Serco are looking for an experienced fitter to join our team to maintain and repair vessels machinery and equipment in a safe, effective, and economic manner. This is a shore-based position as part of the established technical repair and maintenance team which includes an additional 10 hours outside of the core week Mon – Fri as requested by Vessel Superintendents or Technical Manager.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Assist in upgrades as requested by Vessel Superintendents.
  • Specialise in workshop machinery and hand tools related to the role.
  • Undertake the installation, repair, maintenance, and manufacture of mechanical systems required by vessels based at Devonport Naval Base,
  • Complete any task as formally delegated that falls within the post holders training skill and experience.
  • Become familiar with the operation and maintenance of various systems and equipment installed on our fleet of vessels.
  • Carry out fault finding and defect rectification to items of mechanical plant and apparatus as may be defined and specified by the Technical Superintendents/Manager.
  • Have the knowledge of a permit to work system, its requirements and how to submit.
  • Assist other members of the shore side maintenance team with their activities as may be required.
  • Maintain records and stock of tools and report as required.
  • Read drawings, interpret work instructions, and perform work on time, to cost and quality standard.
  • Overhaul and install a variety of mechanical equipment in control, distribution and control systems covering areas such as engine room and ship services.
  • Ensure all spare parts and other items of equipment which may be required are readily available to ensure the continuous and efficient operation of equipment and vessels

Job Requirements:

  • Ability to prioritise workload, working in a logical and methodical manner
  • Flexible and proactive with a commitment to customer satisfaction and continuous improvement.
  • Welding Experience (Not essential but highly preferred)
  • Ability to use own initiative and to work to tight timescales
  • Marine industry background
  • Must be able to provide technical reasoning skills to resolve problems associated with the various elements of the post and be able to bench overhaul, clean and adjust specific items of equipment.
  • HGV licence (Not essential but highly preferred)
  • Time served fitter with extensive ‘hands on’ experience
